We’re right in the middle of summer in Calgary, and that means the temperature is on the rise. While we’re advocates for enjoying your outdoor living room on a hot, sunny day, we also want you to protect yourself and your yard from extreme heat.

Stay hydrated.

Whether you’re participating in outdoor activities, or simply lounging with a good novel, it’s important to stay properly hydrated while you’re in the sun. If you are consuming wine or cocktails, it’s especially important to switch off with water between drinks to make sure your body is staying hydrated. Chilled water and ice will help your body maintain a lower internal temperature.

Show your flowers some extra love.

Like you, your flowers are probably feeling dehydrated right now. Depending on the amount of rain your yard is receiving, you may need to water your flowers and plants twice daily. By watering your plants early in the morning and late in the evening, you can increase the amount of water your landscape absorbs. Watering mid-day leads the sun to evaporate the water before your plants can absorb a good amount.

Protect yourself from the sun.

This is often the most ignored rule by many Calgarians, and we understand why. After spending months waiting for the sun to fully shine, the last thing you want to do is cover up. Alternate between sunny and shaded areas to get the best of both worlds. Large patio umbrellas and canopies offer opportunities for shade while still allowing you to feel like you’re outdoors. If you are going to be spending time in the sun, be sure to wear sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays.

Follow our advice to keep your yard and your body radiant this summer!
