As we head into the colder months, you may be wondering what to do with your garden until next spring. Although your ornamental summer flowers will be stopping their growth, there are other plants in your garden that still need your love and attention throughout the cold weather.

Once the temperature dips a few times, you’ll notice that your perennials garden will begin dying. They are not actually dead, they just need to be cleaned up and trimmed back some. Once you cut them back, apply a layer of mulch to the area to protect your perennials through the winter.

Apply a thick layer of fresh mulch carefully around all the flowers in your garden to act as a security blanket for your flowers during the winter. The mulch will preserve moisture around the flowers and deter weeds from springing up later. An added bonus is that the mulch will also make your garden look nicer during the winter.

Fall can also be a good time to add some plants and shrubs to your garden. Planting in the fall allows the plants time to establish roots in the soil without heat or drought interfering. If you have questions about your garden, set up a consultation with Ananda Landscapes to explore the possibilities of enjoying your garden throughout more of the year!

We look forward to seeing beautiful Calgary landscaping in the winter season!
