Creating a garden that attracts a beautiful array of butterflies is a spectacular sight to see. Planting specific flowers can bring a range of beautiful butterflies to your backyard, and add value to your planned landscape. Here are four flowers that butterflies seem to love, and also easily maintained in Calgary
Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta)
This type of flower tends to attract butterflies due to its sweet nectar. The beautiful yellow Black-eyed Susan works great indoors as a cut flower or can be used to border or line pathways. They love lots of sun, so make sure to take this into consideration when planting this flower.
Purple Coneflower (Echinecea purpurea)
The Purple Coneflower name comes from its cone-shaped center. The Coneflower attracts butterflies with its nectar and large lading pads. This type of flower is one of the easiest perennials to grow, as it’s adaptable to all soil and light conditions.
Sea Holly (Eryngium spp.)
Sea holly is an odd prickly-looking plant, with green or silvery blue stems. When planting sea holly to attract butterflies, ensure that the area of choice is protected from strong winds (critical with the amount of chinooks that we get in Calgary), as this will deter the butterflies from landing.
Yarrow (Achillia spp.)
The yarrow is a butterfly favourite and is easily grown, as it’s a ‘wild flower’. You can find yarrows all around the parks in Calgary, attracting all different types of butterflies. This type of flower usually grows in clumps and spreads naturally, perfect for the low-maintenance gardener.
